What is Charaka Samhita? The Ancient Book That Inspired CHARAKAYU

Have you ever wondered where Ayurvedic medicine actually comes from?

Not from a factory. Not from a laboratory. But from a 5000-year-old book written by one of the greatest healers who ever lived.

That book is the Charaka Samhita. And that healer is Maharishi Charaka — the Father of Ayurveda.

At CHARAKAYU, everything we make is rooted in this ancient text. So today, we want to tell you its story.

Who Was Maharishi Charaka?

Maharishi Charaka lived around 600 BC in ancient India. He was a physician, a teacher and a scientist — all at once.

He was the first person in history to say something that seems obvious today but was revolutionary back then:

"The purpose of medicine is not just to cure the sick — but to keep the healthy person healthy."

Think about that. 2600 years ago, Charaka was already talking about preventive healthcare. Today, modern medicine is just catching up.

He also said something else that still guides us at CHARAKAYU:

"Swasthsya swasthya rakshanam, aturasya vikara prashamanam cha."

Translation: "Protect the health of the healthy. Heal the disease of the sick."

What is the Charaka Samhita?

The Charaka Samhita is the book Maharishi Charaka wrote. It is widely considered the most comprehensive medical text ever written in human history.

Here is what it contains:

  • 📜 341 chapters — covering every aspect of health and healing
  • 🌿 5000+ medicinal herbs — documented with their properties and uses
  • ⚗️ 700 herbal formulations — exact recipes for medicines
  • 🏥 300+ diseases — their causes, symptoms and treatments
  • 🧬 8 branches of medicine — from surgery to psychiatry

This was written 2600 years ago — before modern hospitals, before laboratories, before medical degrees existed.

And yet, it remains one of the most scientifically relevant medical texts in the world today.

The 8 Branches of Ayurveda in Charaka Samhita

Charaka Samhita divides medicine into 8 complete branches. This shows just how advanced Charaka's thinking was:

  • 1. Kaya Chikitsa — Internal Medicine (what we focus on at CHARAKAYU)
  • 2. Shalakya — Ear, Nose and Throat
  • 3. Shalya — Surgery
  • 4. Agada Tantra — Toxicology
  • 5. Bhuta Vidya — Psychiatry and Mental Health
  • 6. Kaumarabhritya — Pediatrics
  • 7. Rasayana — Rejuvenation and Anti-aging
  • 8. Vajeekarana — Reproductive Health and Fertility

A man writing about surgery, psychiatry and reproductive health in 600 BC. That is how extraordinary Maharishi Charaka was.

What Charaka Said About Women's Health

This is especially important for us at CHARAKAYU — because we are a women's wellness brand.

Charaka Samhita has dedicated chapters on women's health — called Stree Roga. And the herbs he recommended for women are still the most effective natural solutions available today.

Here are some of the herbs Charaka documented for women's wellness — the same herbs you will find in CHARAKAYU products:

  • 🌿 Shatavari — Called the "Queen of Women's Herbs." Charaka recommended it for hormonal balance, fertility and overall women's vitality. Modern research fully confirms this.
  • 🌿 Ashoka Chhal — Charaka described it as the most important herb for uterine health and menstrual regulation. Still the gold standard today.
  • 🌿 Lodhra — Recommended for PCOD-related conditions. One of the rarest and most effective herbs for women's hormonal balance.
  • 🌿 Shatpushpa — Documented for ovulation support. Barely used by other brands — but we include it in our She Care formula.
  • 🌿 Nagarmotha — For hormonal balance and menstrual health. A key ingredient in CHARAKAYU Stree Shakti Juice.

These are not new discoveries. Charaka knew about them 2600 years ago.

Has Modern Science Verified Charaka?

Yes. Absolutely. And the list is growing every year.

Here are just a few examples:

  • Ashwagandha — Over 50 clinical trials confirm it reduces stress and cortisol. Charaka recommended it for exactly this reason 2600 years ago.
  • Turmeric (Haldi) — Over 3000 published studi
